THEMES
Appearance: In the short story ”A&P” by John Updike there are three females that show in the corner store “A&P” in bikini’s. Appearance is an important part of the girl’s play in the story. The workers that are working the shift when the girls walk into the store each have a reaction because of their appearance. They caught the employees attention causing them to be distracted from their work. (Shmoop, 2014).
Heroism: The cashier, Sammy, quit his job after his manager at the corner store “A&P” approached the three females that were wearing bikini’s. The manager told them their attire needed to cover more skin or they were not allowed to come back into the store. Sammy quit as an action of heroism to stand up for the three females who thought they were doing no harm. After he quit his job he then realized the females did not mind the words the manager said and Sammy was now jobless. (Shmoop, 2014).
